During the summer of 2008, Nate started his lawn care business. After school began again, he continued it, though on a very limited basis, for the rest of the school year. By the next summer, he had grown it to about 8 – 10 hours per week – all that he could fit into his busy schedule. He enjoys this job primarily because of the opportunities he gains to meet people and because of the exercise he obtains.

Achievements
- Practiced communication skills. As I worked with all types of customers, I learned to speak concisely and clearly.
- Gained valuable marketing experience “selling” my services. While I was finding customers, I went door-to-door giving my sales pitch to people.
- Practiced time management skills. Because I often spent two hours a day on weekdays doing yard care, I had very little free time, and I learned to manage my time well.
- Learned many lawn care techniques. While doing my lawn care business, I not only learned basic skills such as mowing, weeding, and edging, but I also gleaned some useful techniques from my customers. For instance, one customer showed me how to prune bushes.
- Learned how to paint house numbers on curbs. As a part of this business, I painted about 50 house numbers on curbs while taking care to keep the numbers clear and the surrounding area clean.
